The Great Lake Swim – The Window Of Opportunity

Spread the love

Jamie Patrick announced the dates of his swim window for The Great Lake Swim, a critical decision for ultra-marathon swims.

After many hours analyzing data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as well as Weather Underground, we have decided that we will open The Great Lake Swim window August 7th and end it August 12th. Multiple factors went into determining this window including water temp, air temp, wind, waves, current and much more.

The one factor that is making me a bit nervous is the fact that Lake Michigan is experiences the coldest winter in decades with the lake currently 91% covered in ice. What effect will this have in August? Who really knows. Farmers Almanac is calling for slightly higher air temperatures. NOAA is predicting lower water temperatures.

All I can do is cross my fingers.”

And swim like no man has swum before.
