George Brunstad, of Meredith, swims within 15 feet of a Laconia Fire/Rescue boat on Lake Winnipesaukee during the final mile of his 22-mile swim across the lake in Alton Bay on Thursday, August 26, 2010. Brunstad’s spirits were down in the last three miles of the swim and he began to slow down. But when his son, who surprised him from Hawaii, jumped in the water with him, Brunstad picked up the pace and seemed re-energized. He began his record-setting swim the night before on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10 pm in Center Harbor, and finished his swim on Thursday around 8 pm in Alton Bay. Brunstad, 76-years-old, already holds the record for being the oldest person to swim the English Channel in 2004, and now holds the record for the oldest person to swim the length of Lake Winnipesaukee.
