How Tsunamis Work

Near our home in Huntington Beach in Southern California, there are numerous tsunami warning signs along the coast and in the surrounding neighborhoods on street light poles and near parking areas – see above.

Tsunami, a Japanese world (津波) literally meaning harbor wave, is a series of waves or surges most commonly caused by an earthquake beneath the sea floor. Tsunamis can arrive in minutes and may last for more than eight hours. Tsunamis are unlike normal Coastal waves and are highly dangerous. Tsunamis are more like a river during a flood or a mountain of water, often filled with debris.

An immense swell of a tsunami can grow up to 30 meters. TED-Ed educator Alex Gendler and narrator Michelle Snow explain the causes of tsunamis below in an easy-to-understand animation video by Augenblick Studios.
