Spyridon Gianniotis, Angela Maurer Lead World In Setubal

Over 60 swimmers from 20 countries competed on the third leg of the FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup in Setubal, Portugal. The event was popular because this is the course that will serve as the second official Olympic 10K Marathon Swim qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics.

In the unlikely event that Germany and Greece do not qualify swimmers for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in the first qualifier this July in Shanghai, their swimmers sure look good for the second qualifier in Setubal Bay.

Olympian Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece won in 1 hour 40 minutes 29 seconds followed 2 seconds later by Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria and Thomas Lurz of Germany a relatively distant third in 1:40:36.

Olympian Angela Maurer of Germany won the women’s race in 1:48:41 with teammate Isabell Donath second (1:48:43) and Greece’s Kalliopi Araouzou third in 1:48:51.
