Ana Marcela Cunha, Too Tough For Words

Cool and cold, warm, hot. Tranquil or turbulent. Jellyfish, waves…nothing seems to stop Ana Marcela Cunha from climbing on the podium at international competitions.
The extreme water temperatures in Doha, Qatar at the ANOC World Beach Games 5 km race certainly did not stop the 27-year-old Brazilian star. “Everybody knows it was very hot. I have tried to swim a little bit more comfortable, less strokes. In the closing stages I pushed as hard as I could.”
Doha was the last-minute substitution for the ANOC World Beach Games that were previously scheduled to be held in San Diego, California, but were moved to Qatar due to a lack of finances to host the IOC-sanctioned Games in San Diego.
Then 10 days later, Cunha headed over to Wuhan, China in order to compete in the 5 km, 10 km and the mixed team relay at the 7th Military World Games.
Cunha, a sergeant in the Brazilian army, had previously won the 5 km and 25 km world championships in South Africa, qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, won gold at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and the World Beach Games, but was competing in the World Military Games for the first time in her career. After China, she headed over to compete in the 8.5 km race across the Rio Negro in Manaus, Brazil.
“We are trying to compete in races in hot water,” she said of her schedule. “We know that it is going to be hot in Japan.”
