WOWSA Launches Free Global Calendar
In WOWSA’s annual survey on how to best serve the open water community, 78% of the 2,140 respondents said they wanted more news and information on races and events.
In response to these results, WOWSA launched a global event calendar this week.
WOWSA Founder Steven Munatones, who has covered the sport since 1978, said,
“As everyone knows, the number of open water events has significantly and consistently increased year over year since the IOC approved the 10 km Olympic marathon swim in 2005.”
Munatones added, “In addition to…
- winter & Ice
- marathon & Channel
- circumnavigations
- multi-day stage
- swim vacations
- expeditions
- charity
- high altitude
…there are at least 25,000 organized open water swims held every year around the globe.”
The 50th Anniversary Waikiki Roughwater Swim (pictured below) was the first event to appear on the calendar. Race Director Kaia Hedlund said, “I think that the registration process was quite simple. I see the benefit for the swimmers who can easily learn about different swim adventures.”
