Winter Wins By Almond, Monahan, López, Whelchel

The 2018 United States Winter Swimming National Championships occurred this past weekend in the 36.5°F (2.5°C) waters of Coney Island in New York. Swimmers came from all over the United States as well as from Poland, Belgium and Russia.

The event was kicked off with a victory by Daina Bouquin in the 200m freestyle that was followed up with a win by Spaniard Diego López who won both the 100m and 200m freestyle [shown above].

López said, “These races were in preparation for my expedition to swim the Ice Kilometer in Antarctica this November. I will also need to do a qualifying swim of 1 km in water under 41°F (5°C)which I plan to do in Boston sometime in March or April.”

The ubiquitous ice swimming pair of Jaimie Monahan and Elaine Howley barely got to dry off during the competition as they competed in the 200m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 25m freestyle, and 25m butterfly races.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Almond won three races in the 25m and 50m breaststroke and the 100m freestyle while Jeremy Whelchel sprinted to dual victories in the 25m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
