Who Is Going To The Olympics? Men Going To Rio

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

72 men, 10 spots. That is it.

They train all their lives for this moment, culminating in 4 years of focused preparation, and race that ends within 2 hours.

But the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championships 10 km marathon swim in Kazan is the ultimate test of speed, strength, stamina and strategy. Ten spots are available for the top 10 finishers who will automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim

Who will go?

If we had to pick the top 25 most likely men to qualify for the 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Rio de Janeiro next summer, we would narrow it down to these men by stint of their previous performances:

1 Diogo Villarinho (BRA)
2 Chad Ho (RSA)
3 Ferry Weertman (GER)
4 Kane Radford (NZL)
5 Eric Hedlin (CAN)
6 Oussama Mellouli (TUN)
7 Ferry Weertman (NED)
8 Jordan Wilimovsky (USA)
9 Sean Ryan (USA)
10 Federico Vanelli (ITA)
11 Axel Reymond (FRA)
12 Christopher Bryan (IRL)
13 Allan Do Carmo (BRA)
14 Richard Weinberger (CAN)
15 Simone Ruffini (ITA)
16 Christian Reichert (GER)
17 Daniel Fogg (GBR)
18 Daniil Serebrennikov (RUS)
19 George O’Brien (AUS)
20 Yasunari Hirai (JPN)
21 Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE)
22 Andreas Waschburger
23 Jack Burnell (GBR)
24 Brian Ryckeman (BEL)
25 Mateusz Sawrymowicz (POL)

If we had to pick the top 10 most likely men to qualify for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim at the 2016 Rio Olympics, we would take a wild guess and narrow it down to these men:

1 Chad Ho (RSA)
2 Ferry Weertman (GER)
3 Oussama Mellouli (TUN)
4 Ferry Weertman (NED)
5 Jordan Wilimovsky (USA)
6 Richard Weinberger (CAN)
7 Simone Ruffini (ITA)
8 Daniel Fogg (GBR)
9 Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE)
10 Brian Ryckeman (BEL)

But predictions and guesses mean nothing. Many of the competitors will swim the race of their lives; 72 men will swim as fast and tactically as possible. There will be surprises among the top 10 Olympic qualifiers and there will be a different group of 10 men than listed above. Monday is the day. Kazan, Russia is the place.
