What Comes Around Goes Around

Eight times Chelsea Gubecka went around the 1.25 km smooth-water course in Brighton Beach, and eight times she looked smoothly and confidently dominatant in the calm waters.

The 19-year-old from Kawana Water made her move at the halfway mark when she did not break for the feeding pontoon. Ultimately, she won in 2:01:20, over a minute and a half over Kareena Lee (2:02.53) and teammate Mackenzie Brazier (2:03.13).

I’m pretty stoked,” said Gubecka to Swimming Australia, “It’s a tough event and to be able to chalk-up five titles in in a quality field like this is awesome. At the five km mark, I decided to take a risk, and if ever it was a year to take risks it was this year, and I needed to test myself so I put on a spurt on for a breakaway and it worked.

I must admit I was a little nervous before the race with maximum points (20) on offer towards Pan Pacific Team Selection. I’ll now go chasing top 10 finishes on FINA World Cup events and to podium somewhere would be ideal.”
