Shelley Stewart’s Biathlon Across America: Drive + SCAR + Drive

Shelley Stewart and her husband Derek experienced a 12-day adventure across America last week.

They drove 3,470 km (2,156 miles) over four days from Tampa, Florida to Arizona. Then, Shelley swam while Derek kayaked four days across four lakes at the SCAR Swim. They smiled throughout swims across Saguaro Lake in 4 hours 30 minutes, Canyon Lake in 5 hours 3 minutes, and Apache Lake in 10 hours 51 minutes.

She explained her mindset on Day Four when she stopped a mile short on the Roosevelt Lake course. “I wanted to finish on my terms so I just made the executive decision to ‘be done’ while I still had the presence of mind to do so. The Apache Lake crossing just about killed me – it was such an epic adventure.

Then they headed back home to Tampa.

The professor of computer science celebrated her 50th birthday with SCAR. And she has done other marathon swims including the 11.2 km Swim Around Lido Key, the 10.2 km Swim Fort De Soto, the 10 km Fontana Lake Swim, the 12.8 km Honeymoon Island Marathon Swim, the 20.5 km Infinityman, and a 32 km charity swim across Tampa Bay while Derek kayaks for all her swims.
