Rhys Mainstone of Australia is headed from Down Under to Eilat, Israel for this weekend’s FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup with some very long-term plans.
After reclaiming the Australian 10 km marathon swimming title in February, Rhys has set his sights on Israel as the first step to Rio de Janeiro.
“Eilat is a great start for me.
I missed out on the Olympic selection [for London] at last year’s world championships in Shanghai. So I am setting down a four-year plan for the 2016 Rio Olympics [where the marathon swim will be held at Copacabana Beach]. For me, the new race in Israel is a major stop in the World Cup circuit. The race in Eilat is exciting and different and a great way to showcase our sport in the purest way.”
