Extreme swimmer and filmmaker Jack Bright is ready to greet his fellow teammates on a relay swim across the Bering Strait.
Bright will soon be joined by Jackie Cobell (UK), Matias Ola (Argentina), Ram Barkai (South Africa), Paolo Chiarino (Italy), Henri Kaarma (Estonia), Toomas Haagi (Estonia), and Alexandr Brylin, Elena Guseva and many other strong Russian ice swimmers. “They are all experienced ice swimmers and all have flights booked and are arriving in the next few days in Kamchatka.
We will leave Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky aboard the Akademik Schokalskiy on July 27th. The swim should begin about 5 days later. It is not easy to organize with lots of logistical issues and a big vessel to transport the large amount of people involved.”
He has been training in a valley of geysers with a small glacial lake.
With small being the operative word.
“The lake was only about 12 meters long with a huge piece of ice in the middle. However, it was sufficient for training in extremely cold water. I was in for 10 minutes. It felt good to be in the icy water again and I thought about the Bering Strait and the immense challenge of multiple immersions in such cold water. It is not to be underestimated.”
