48-year-old John Farrell Kelly became the first person to swim 9 miles across Fremont Lake on the western side of the Wind River mountains, filled with cold water, in Wyoming, U.S.A. on October 1st.
His 6 hour 37 minute effort in the high-altitude lake (7,418 feet) started as a dream years ago. “I have been thinking about making this swim for 4 years. I looked at Google Maps and plotted out how to site and navigate the swim at that time. I trained 1 to 2 hours a day for four years.
I swam it by English Channel rules, no wetsuit, no contact with boat or crew, no assistance in or out of water. The water temp was 58°F (14.4°C).”
