Olympic and world champion Ferry Weertman won the FINA Male Open Water Swimmer 2018 Award as a result of outstanding performances at the LEN Championships in Scotland’s Loch Lomond and winning the 2018 FINA Marathon Swim World Series.
Weertman is powered by an intensity and laid-back passion that is unmistakable in the 26-year-old Dutchman.
Steven Munatones observes, “Ferry has both speed and stamina in abundance. These talents are based on a massive amount of fast training mileage both in the pool and open water. He not only sustains an incredible drive to continue realizing his athletic goals, but he also has a great personality and charisma to represent the sport in a responsible manner befitting a modern-day hero. Even with a giant target on his back at every race, Ferry won a wide variety of races from the RCP Tiburon Mile in the cold waters of San Francisco Bay to the FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim World Series race in warm Qatar as well as the LEN Championship races in a wetsuit.”
