61-year-old Ned Denison will attempt to be the first person to swim 8 km around Cork City, over 7 weirs and under 30 bridges beginning in 6:15 pm on June 3rd .

His goal is 1 hour 45 minutes.  “I am especially interested in being the first. Somebody will eventually be faster – but there is only ever one first.”

But making this attempt is not simply a goal that recently came to his mind.  He has been planning this circumnavigation over the past 10 years.  “I was part of the original planning group for the restart of the Lee Swim in 2003 – 2004 and did the trial swim in 2004. I have always wanted to explore the rest of the river.

I have met with the Port many times in the past 15 years and been part of teams which received more than 15 approvals over these years.  Before seeking approval I had a fully developed plan and stated crew.”

While a successful swim is anticipated, Denison has many more goals including a 27 km swim along northern Spain during the summer and a 10 km swim along the coast of Southern California in October.

The Batalla de Rande swim is from the Islas Cies to Isla de San Simon.  The Redondo Beach Coastal Challenge is along the rarely swum rugged coast of California.”
