The number of famed marathon swimmers who have trained in Seal Beach, California is relatively small, but it is a remarkable bunch: Lynne Cox, Penny Dean, John York, Cindy Cleveland to mention a few Honor Swimmers in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Those luminaries all started somewhere.  The Seal Beach Annual Rough Water Swim was one of those local catalysts of their career.

Today is the 50th edition of the 1-mile and 5 km races as well as additional shorter races for younger athletes.

Remarkably, two local swimming luminaries have attended every race since 1969: Scott Weir, who will announce this year’s event, and Marilyn Bittle.

Race reports to follow.
