With the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, there will be an increasing attention on open water swimming for the remainder of the quadrennial in Japan. The Japan Swimming Federation organizes the 2018 Open Water Swimming Circuit Series*, a 14-race series throughout Japan:
Race 1: 5 km Shizuoka Ocha Open Water Swimming Race on June 3rd at Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture
Race 2: 5 km Nakaumi Open Water Swimming on June 24th at Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture
Race 3: 5 km Fifth Annual Nanki Tanabe・Ogigahama Open Water Swimming on June 24th at Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture
Race 4: 5 km Akune Open Water Swimming on July 1st at Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture
Race 5: 5 km Sixth Annual World Heritage Yakushima Open Water Swimming on July 7th at Yakushima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture
Race 6: 5 km 22nd Annual Tateyama Open Water Swimming Festival on July 15th-16th at Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture
Race 7: 5 km Open Water Swimming Mie Open Owase on July 29th at Owase City, Mie Prefecture
Race 8: 5 km Sado Open Water Swimming on August 5th at Sado City, Niigata Prefecture
Race 9: 5 km Kamaishi Open Water Swimming Nebama on August 5th at Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture
Race 10: 5 km Fifth Annual Biwako・Nagahama Open Water Swimming on August 19th at Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture
Race 11: 3.2 km 12th Annual Himeji Ieshima Open Water Swimming on August 25th-26th in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture
Race 12: 800m, 2.5 km, 10 km 15th Annual Shonan Open Water Swimming on September 1st-2nd at Zushi City ・Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture
Race 13: 5 km Setouchi Open Water Swimming in Shibukawa on September 30th at Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture
Race 14: 5 km Susaki Open Water Swimming on October 21st in Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture

5 km 73rd annual National Sports Festival Swimming Competition on September 12th in Wakaso Village, Fukui Prefecture
10 km 94th annual Japanese National Swimming Championships on September 23rd on Hojo Coast in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture run concurrently with the 18th annual FINA World Championships Japanese Selection Race and the 2019 Australian National Open Water Swimming Championships Japanese Selection Race

Of course, many of the world’s fastest open water swimmers will compete in the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships 10 km marathon swim. It will be held in Tokyo’s Odaiba Marine Park on August 13th, the same location for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic 10K Marathon Swim. The men will start the 8-loop 1.25 km course at 7:30 am with the women starting 2 minutes later.
