The 100th Japanese national open water swimming championships (第100回日本選手権水泳競技大会OWS競技) were held over the weekend in Tateyama City along the Hojo Coast in Chiba Prefecture, just north of Tokyo.
Few countries have held formal national open water swimming championships as long as Japan has.

The level of sponsorship was impressive as was the Japanese race announcer who quite enthusiastically called the 5 km and 10 km races for both men and women. Even if you cannot understand the Japanese language, the announcer made the finishes of the men’s and women’s 10 km races very exciting. Watch and listen here and here.

Three weeks ago, Japan also held its 100th annual collegiate national championships that include open water swimming. We know of few other countries that have held formal intercollegiate national championships in open water swimming for so long, although the United States will hold a MPSF open water swimming championship event that is open to any American collegiate swimmer on October 19th in Long Beach, California (see here).
