The next generation of fast open water swimmers took to racing the 5 km event at the 2025 USA Swimming Junior National Open Water Swimming Championships held today in Sarasota, Florida.

On the young women’s side, Una Diaz of the Long Island Aquatic Club in New York outdueled Sarah Zhang of the Revolution Aquatic Club in Massachusetts and Zayda Miehl of the Corvallis Aquatic Team of Oregon.

On the young men’s side, Lincoln Driesse of Planet Swim Aquatics in Florida outswam Sawyer Hansen of Saint Petersburg Aquatics in Florida and Joey Eaddy of the Revolution Aquatic Club in Massachusetts.

14-year-old Revolution Aquatic Club teammates Zhang and Eaddy [shown above with their teammates] have not yet had the opportunity to practice in the open water this year as the waterways in Massachusetts are still too cold for training, but they both enjoyed the experience down south in warmer climes. Eaddy said, “For my first open water race, it was a great experience and I felt it was a lot longer than a 1650 in the pool. It was difficult to see with the sun [in our eyes], but I knew I was in a top spot. The start was rough with a lot of fighting for a spot – I saw several yellow cards on the first loop.”

Zhang said, “I finished 7th last year [in this same event] so I wanted a better result this time. I couldn’t see the lead girl, so I thought was in the lead. Otherwise, I may have pushed a bit sooner, but overall it was a good experience.”
