Emilia Finer of Frozen Ferns Wins 100 Butterfly at the IISA World Championship

After winning the 200m individual medley by a comfortable margin, 20-year-old Emilia Finer from New Zealand won the 100m butterfly at the IISA 6th World Championship in Molveno, Italy by 4.3 seconds, an impressively dominant victory.

With her 1:10.42 world record set last year in the IISA New Zealand and Southern Hemisphere Championships, Finer of the Frozen Ferns remains far and away ahead of the world’s competition in the 100m butterfly distance. Overall, she was extraordinarily impressive with the following results:

  • second in the 500m freestyle on Day 1
  • second in the 250m freestyle on Day 2
  • won the 200m individual medley on Day 4
  • won the 100m butterfly on Day 5

The silver medal was won by the also extremely impressive Alisa Fatum-Böker who was busy this week:

  • won the 500m freestyle on Day 1
  • won the 250m freestyle on Day 2
  • fourth in the 100m freestyle on Day 3
  • won the 1000m freestyle on Day 4
  • second in the 100m freestyle on Day 5
  • second in the 100m butterfly on Day 5

The bronze medal was on by Turkey’s Bengisu Avci who finished sixth in the 200m individual medley yesterday while taking a small divergence from her marathon training for the Oceans Seven to race in the 1.8°C water in the Italian mountains this week.

Fourth place was captured by 17-year-old Ezmee Jones of the USA who also had a busy week in Molveno:

  • fifth in the 100m backstroke on Day 1
  • second in the 50m backstroke on Day 2
  • fourth in the 250m freestyle on Day 2
  • seventh in the 100m freestyle on Day 3
  • second in the 200m individual medley on Day 4
  • fourth in the 100m butterfly on Day 5

Similar to the crème de la crème above, 33-year-old Sarah Eliz Najera Espinosa of Ecuador (shown above left) squeaked into the 100m butterfly final. She was part of Team Ecuador who included 35-year-old Elizabeth Culcay (shown above right), 38-year-old Sara Palacios (shown above middle), 29-year-old Carlos Manzo, and 58-year-old Tam Hirst – part of the ever-growing global contingent of ice swimmers willing to race in 1.8°C water.
