When we are at the park or walking on beach, we occasionally see a three-legged dog (like Una above) or a dog walking with their hind legs dangling from a dog wheelchair. We smile widely, instantly inspired by their genuine joy at running around with other able-bodied canines.
A three-legged dog does not seem to care that it is missing a leg. They enjoy playing with the other dogs. They run and fetch sticks or balls. They go all-out, happy to be able to have fun.
Along the same lines as the following sayings:*
- Dance like nobody’s watching
- Sing like no one is listening
- Love like you’ve never been hurt
- Live like it’s heaven on earth
Swimming in the open water is similar.
- Swim like your pace does not matter
- Swim in the waves like a pod of dolphin
- Enter the cold water like the temperature is comfortable
- Train like it is your raison d’etre (reason for living)
* Susanna Clark and Richard Leigh composed ‘Come from the Heart’ in 1987 with the following lyrics:
You’ve got to sing like you don’t need the money
Love like you’ll never get hurt
You’ve got to dance like nobody’s watchin’
It’s gotta come from the heart if you want it to work.International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmers Yuko Matsuzaki and Paul Asmuth are shown in the upper photo.
