Captain Tim Johnson, author of The History of Open-Water Marathon Swimming, gave a scientifically-oriented speech at the Global Open Water Swimming Conference at Columbia University on tides, currents and other marine elements that potentially have significant influence – either positive or negative – on the speed and direction of the swimmers.
