Mike Arbuthnot (shown on lower left), the founder of the Midmar Mile, Martin Strel, Christine Jennings and Ashley Twichell are showcased in the latest promotional materials for the 2012 Midmar Mile.

The world’s largest open water swim was swum for the first time in 1973 when Mike and two friends Dick Park and Brian Glover, decided to stage a mile race in KwaZulu-Natal because they were unable to compete in the Buffalo Mile in East London.

153 competitors entered the first event and Mike has taken part in every single Midmar Mile since the beginning. The race has now attracted over 18,000 participants and is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest open water swimming event in the world.
