New FINA Rule Will Enhance Safety At Pro Marathons

A rule change to the Rules and Regulations governing the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup (between 2011 – 2013) will most certainly enhance the safety aspects of the sport.

Based on a FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee recommendation, the FINA Bureau approved a new rule that require the local organising committee to provide a sufficient number of safety craft (either boats or kayaks) so all swimmers who split off from the lead group or the lead swimmer can be followed directly by a safety boat or kayak.

Furthermore, the safety craft must follow the swimmer or group of swimmers at a reasonable distance so immediate intervention is possible if safety action is required. The FINA Safety Delegate is mandated to confirm this new rule is followed.
