FORT LAUDERDALE. Open water swimming officials and volunteers always need to keep alert, from before the start of the race to after the athletes have finished.

This video, caught by Bruce Wigo of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, shows an elite athlete struggling towards the end of a championship race. She obvious needed help, but fortunately help was close and immediate. But what would have happens when athletes run into such problems out along the course?
