Aerial video footage of the 2012 aQuellé Midmar Mile was taken by RC Helicam‘s quadcopter outfitted with a GoPro and specialty lens to reduce fisheye distortion. The footage of the start and finish of the world’s large competitive open water swim was taken by the helicam pilot. Owner-operator Andrew Martens stood onshore with video glasses that allowed him to frame each shot with a live video downlink while flying the mini helicam above the water surface and crowds.
