Walter Scott, an attorney, former Navy SEAL, and member of the La Jolla Cove Swim Club, is on his way to become the second person after Penny Palfrey to swim the 37.7 miles (60.6 km) from Santa Barbara Island to the California mainland.
To date, Palfrey has been the only person to complete this crossing in 17 hours 53 minutes on September 25th 2009 (see below). After being delayed a few weeks, Scott has been swimming steadily sans a Shark Shield with regular feeding stops every 30 minutes.
Scott can be followed here on the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association website as he makes his way to California after last night’s start in darkness.
