The video above shows a mind-boggling 1000m heat at the International Ice Swimming Association-sanctioned Ice Swimming World Championship in Lake Semenovskoe in Murmansk, Russia on March 20th.
Christof Wandratsch (Germany), Albert Sobirov (Russia), Henri Kaarma (Estonia), Craig Lenning (USA), and Sergio Daniel Salomone (Argentina) among others battled it out in the fastest ice swim in history.
What is surprising to see is how Wandratsch streamlined off of each turn and did 1-2 butterfly kicks to maintain his momentum. To have this awareness and abilities in 0.8°C water and -7°C air temperature in a snowfall is one indication of his amazing physiological talents and psychological strength.
