There will be a fiercely contested race within a race at the next World Cup event in Cozumel, Mexico.

The race in Cozumel is serving as a world championships selection meet for a few countries. For example, open water swimmers from Canada are heading to tropical Cozumel in order to punch their ticket to the 15th FINA World Aquatic Championships in Barcelona, Spain in July.

The open water swimming dates are July 20-27 where Canada will be represented by 3 men and 2 women who will be selected at the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Cozumel on April 13th.

While the athletes in the 5 km team event will be determined by the Swimming Canada National Open Water Coach, the swimmers will be selected according to the following criteria:

1. Finish in the top 8 at the 2012 London Olympics 10 km Marathon Swim are selected if the swimmers also compete at the race in Cozumel (this is specifically related to Richard Weinberger who won a bronze in London).

2. Additionally, the highest two placing swimmers of each gender at the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Cozumel will be selected.
