Charlie Chapman, Jr. aka The Tuna completed a 1981 crossing of the English Channel in 12 hours 30 minutes at the age of 27 [see videos above].
In 1983, he completed the first butterfly swim around Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco Bay, California. In 1988, he completed a butterfly circumnavigation at the 1988 Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in 9 hours 25 minutes. In 1989, he completed the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York again in 9 hours 35 minutes at the age of 35.
Dial forward 30 years and head across The Pond, and the issue of blacks not swimming as much as others remains fact in many locations.
