When open water swimmers get ready for a marathon swim or channel swim, they make sure they have extra goggles, their favorite swimsuits, sufficient lanolin, a proper amount of feeds, and things like ear plugs.

But Richard Ernst is different.

When the Mexican doctor prepares for the 88 nautical mile (101 statute mile or 163 km) Sueño 88 marathon swimming relay, he does so as a swimmer and a physician. For the unprecedented swim across the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, he packs a different sort of gear [see above].

From the Baja California peninsula to the mainland of Mexico, captains Vito Bialla, Alejandro Abarroa, and Antonio Caballero, and swimmers David Ogden, Mauricio Prieto, Luane Rowe, Richard Ernst, Shannon Navarro, and Susan Moody Prieto will swim approximately 50 hours starting on June 3rd…and Dr. Ernst wants to prepare for everything.
