Butterfly Perspectives In The Open Water

The World Open Water Swimming Association published its rules for butterfly in the open water, backstroke in the open water, and breaststroke in the open water.

For every 100 people who read the butterfly in the open water, only 37 read the article on backstroke rules in the open water, and only 59 read the article about breaststroke. This tells us that there is much more interest in swimming butterfly in an open water swim rather than backstroke or breaststroke.

And the comments received from the butterflyers in the open water were generally overwhelming with excited.

The [rules] were much appreciated,” said Brian Suddeth. “I’ll be back in the Chesapeake Bay 1-miler this year as a partner and guide for a blind friend. I did read over the butterfly rules. My two official open water fly swims were both legal by these rules [but] it’s not for the faint of heart! I have to move my pace in fly up as well as my endurance before I can consider attempting the full 4.4-mile Chesapeake Bay crossing in fly.”

Thanks for coming up with sensible rules for the swimmers pushing the
boundries with other strokes in open water.

I must admit I have mixed feelings about allowing a breastroke kick
though. It is something I have thought about a lot, as a breastroke
kick is allowed in masters pool swimming.
